The Can You
Tell Which Students are Homeless?
poster was developed by Opening Doors to inform school
staff and to raise their awareness of homeless students so
they can help them succeed in school. The companion
brochure gives more detail on how school staff can help
identify homeless students, the rights and services
available to homeless students, and where to find help for
these students.
Posters and
brochures can be displayed and available in staff lounges,
administrative offices, or affixed to bulletin boards.
The poster and brochure can be printed in black and white or
in color. Both the poster and the brochure have a box to
add a label
with homeless liaison contact information.
Shelter Guide Book
(Print in booklet format)
The Illinois
McKinney-Vento Opening Doors Project has developed
“A Guide
for Shelter Staff About School Enrollment and Services.”
Shelter staff are in a unique position to help children and
their families and unaccompanied youth learn about their
educational rights and school services and supports under
the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program in Illinois.
This quick reference guide is a tool that shelter staff can
use to assist families to keep their children in school.
Shelter staff can download the Guide for use or school staff
may download the Guide and distribute it to area shelters at
http://homelessed.net/.
Unaccompanied Youth Brochure
The
Unaccompanied Youth Brochure, developed by Opening Doors, is
to increase awareness among youth, especially youth
experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing
homelessness, about school services that can help them stay
in school or re-enroll in school if they have dropped out.
A key purpose of the brochure is to connect youth
experiencing homelessness with the Homeless Education
Program Liaison in their school district.
Brochures can be printed in black and
white or in color. The brochure has two boxes where contact
information for the local Homeless Education Program Liaison
and information about local resources can be added to labels
before distribution. Brochures can be provided to youth at
school as well as other locations where youth congregate in
the community.

Parent Outreach Brochure
The
brochure, Have you and your children lost housing?,
was developed for parents as a companion piece to the school
poster that increases awareness of services for children,
youth, and their families who are experiencing
homelessness. The brochure, available in English and in
Spanish, summarizes the rights and services available to
students, including remaining at their school of origin.
Local liaisons can personalize the brochure by adding their school or
district contact information before making it available to parents.
