LeTendre Education Fund Scholarships *
Children and youth in homeless situations face numerous barriers to
educational success.
Deep poverty, high mobility, and school requirements often make attending
and
succeeding in school a challenge. Despite these challenges, many students
who experience homelessness not only graduate from high school, but wish to
pursue a college education.
Established in 1998 in memory of André E. LeTendre, husband of Mary Jean
LeTendre,
former Director of Compensatory Education for the U.S. Department of
Education, the
LeTendre Education Fund for Homeless Children provides scholarship
assistance to
students who are homeless or have experienced homelessness.

Parent Outreach Brochure
The
brochure, Have you and Your Children Lost Housing?,
was developed for parents as a companion piece to the school
poster that increases awareness of services for children,
youth, and their families who are experiencing
homelessness. The brochure, available in English and in
Spanish, summarizes the rights and services available to
students, including remaining at their school of origin.
Local liaisons can personalize the brochure by adding their school or district
contact information before making it available to parents.

A Guide for Shelter Staff
Illinois McKinney-Vento Opening Doors Technical
Assistance Project has developed “A Guide for Shelter Staff About School
Enrollment and Services.” Shelter staff are in a unique position
to help children and their families and unaccompanied youth learn about
their educational rights and school services and supports under the
McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Program in Illinois. This quick
reference guide is a tool that shelter staff can use to assist families
to keep their children in school. |

Unaccompanied Youth Brochure
The
Unaccompanied Youth Brochure, developed by Opening Doors, is
to increase awareness among youth, especially youth
experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing
homelessness, about school services that can help them stay
in school or re-enroll in school if they have dropped out.
A key purpose of the brochure is to connect youth
experiencing homelessness with the Homeless Education
Program Liaison in their school district.
Brochures can be printed in black and
white or in color. The brochure has two boxes where contact
information for the local Homeless Education Program Liaison
and information about local resources can be added to labels
before distribution. Brochures can be provided to youth at
school as well as other locations where youth congregate in
the community.
